The Best Seasonal Family-Friendly Spots in Portland

While our Portland summer looked a little different this year, it will soon be winding down with sweater weather season just around the corner. Even though we love the changing seasons, we’re eager to enjoy every last ounce of summer and the activities it has to offer. Lucky for us, Portland has no shortage of things to do while keeping our community safe and healthy. Here are our top family-friendly picks to fill your weekend itinerary:

Hawthorne at Home

Each August, the Hawthorne neighborhood comes together for the Hawthorne Street Fair, Portland’s oldest street fair. And one of our favorite events of the year!

This year, they’ll go virtual, launching on August 23. For the virtual fair, expect to see your favorite vendor booths, listen to live music, find things to do with the kids, and even order food from Hawthorne’s eateries. This event will be “live” online through November and can add some excitement to your weekend from the comfort of your own home.

Catch a Sunset Hike at Mount Tabor

Mount Tabor Park is Portland’s only city park that is built on top of an extinct volcano, making it a truly unique spot. The paved trails up to the summit make it a mild hike, and with amenities like restrooms, picnic sites, and play areas all around, it’s practical to take the whole family. At Mount Tabor’s peak, you can take in stunning city views.

Grab a Photo at Mill Ends Park

It only takes up two feet in diameter, so don’t plan to stick around long, but it is officially the World’s Smallest Park, making it a fun pit-stop for a photo-op.

Enjoy Cajun Food and Support Local Vendors

On Friday, August 21, our Clackamas Pub + Cidery will host a pop up spotlighting local BIPOC makers and artisans. Right Bayou will be cooking up cajun favorites from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. while the Clackamas cidery will be pouring your favorites. Vendors attending include Warley Byrd Creations, Jtcreations, HAB Sauce, Cross-Eyed Cricket Farms, and more!

If you’re tight on time but still want to swing by, preorder your lunch from Right Bayou HERE.

Visit a Local Berry Farm

Blueberry season is in full swing at U-pick berry farms all around the Portland area. This favorite seasonal activity is one that is great for all ages. Many farms are operational this season but have additional regulations in place to help stop the spread of COVID-19.

Venture out to Swan Island Dahlia Farms

Swan Island Dahlia Farms is home to nearly 40 acres of blooming dahlia flowers. Stroll through the entire farm, or, if you aren’t up for a long trek, you can see every variety of their dahlias at the Display Garden at the beginning of the fields’ path.
