8 Reasons to Pick Cider This Holiday Season
Every year, Portland Cider Co., along with other members of the American Cider Association, team up to celebrate the season.
Thanksgiving is one of the biggest weeks of the year for cider, so we’re sharing our top reasons why we’re choosing to #PickCider this season.
Dating back to where it all began, cider was the drink of choice for the Pilgrims at their very first Thanksgiving. They said that the fermented cider was safer to drink than the groundwater, and, well, we agree.
Similar to how wine doesn’t “just” taste like grapes, cider doesn’t “just” taste like apples. Portland Cider Co. offers a wide variety of ciders to fit any palate, even your picky mother-in-law’s.
Cider is environmentally friendly! The apples used to make cider don’t have to be “pretty” like the ones you typically see on store shelves, allowing us to use more fruit from harvests. And, from our PDX Community Cider pressing we even donated the leftover apple pulp to farms located in our Portland backyard (pigs love it!).
Besides drinking cider straight-up, it can easily be incorporated into a variety of recipes for cocktails and meals alike. The American Cider Association has a database of great #PickCider recipes too.
Cider is a naturally gluten- free drink, allowing accommodation for those at the holiday dinner table with special dietary restrictions.
Drinking cider supports small businesses (like us!) and the local produce farmers that supply the apples.
It’s tried and true. Cider has been the apple of the world’s eye since 55 B.C.
The holidays are all about tradition, much like the cider world. For us personally, we are rooted in English traditions for how we make our cider, but traditions like wassailing are commonplace for cideries to celebrate.
Above all else, we’re choosing to #PickCider this season as a way to enjoy the new memories we are creating this year, while reminiscing about holidays and years past over that same Proper Pint we know and love. Cheers!
