Artistic Inspiration All Around Portland

From food to cider and everything in between, Portland is a city full of artisans. There’s so much to explore, taste, and do right here in Portland – it would take a lifetime to experience everything to the fullest.

In fact, besides offering 30 ciders on tap and a full food menu, our Hawthorne pub features works of art from local artists on display to add to the eccentric Portland-centric setting of our taproom.

Over the past few months, Portland artists have been hard at work adding to the already fabulous and unique art scene that Portland has to offer.

Here are some of our city’s newest mural additions and where you can find them.

Ladies Up

Female identifying artists have been underrepresented when it comes to overall access to painting in public spaces.  As a result of this, not all perspectives and stories have been told in Portland’s artistic landscape.

To change this, Portland Street Art Alliance established the “Ladies Up Mural Project”, bringing five new murals to the Southeast part of the city. The murals were painted by female-identifying artists based in Portland, Oregon.

The women who were selected for the project were given the creative freedom to produce work that they want to add to their portfolio. The program aims to support emerging artists, experimentation, and innovation.

You can view these completed murals at Morrison Place, 1401 SE Morrison St. (along SE Alder St.).

Open Eye Art X Color Outside the Lines

These two organizations have gathered local foster children and other groups to beautify a 2,700 sq.ft. of space on Southwest 4th Avenue at Alder Street.

The young artists have written out their hopes for the community on the walls before painting them. The murals include large scale paintings of words such as “enlighten” and “listen.”

Organizers of the project hope that Portlandians who stop by to see the project add their own mark too by adding a few meaningful words of their personal hopes to the walls. You can stop by to see this project at Southwest 4th Avenue on Alder Street.

Viaduct District

Announced last year, phase one of the Viaduct Arts district murals are now complete. This project took over the walls beneath the Hawthorne and Morrison Bridge Viaducts with five new large-scale murals. All murals are by diverse, Oregon-based artists.

The goal of Viaduct Arts is to promote more inclusive engagement and access to public art and art-making in the city.

This project is now looking toward the future with plans to expand into late 2020 and the summer of 2021.

Forest for the Trees

Forest for the Trees is a Portland-based nonprofit organization with the mission to help the people of Portland break out of their daily routines and instead see the city as a “literal canvas and gallery for artists, pedestrians, and big thinkers alike.”

This nonprofit wants to grow the presence of arts in Portland, especially contemporary public art. Festival-style events were held for creation 2013 - 2017, but now mural projects come about as opportunities arise to grow the presence of art in Portland.
