Observing #DryJanuary in a Way We Can All Enjoy
Ah, Dry January. That strange time every year when we hear of people vowing to stop drinking for 31 days (we don’t hear it from any of our friends, but we are well aware of this trend).
Dry January as a whole originated to encourage people all around the world to practice more mindful drinking - which we’re always an advocate for - and to act as a 31-day wellness “challenge” to cut out the excess calories, sugar, and carbs that so often come with your favorite cocktail. It officially began in 2013 with just 4,000 participants but has grown to over 4 million participants last year.
However, since 2013, many healthier options for happy hour have entered the market (like our Ciderade and Bubbly Brut ciders).
This year, in collaboration with the American Cider Association, we’re observing Dry January in a more doable, and more fun, way for all of us. We’ve teamed up this month for their second annual Dry January where we’re focused on enjoying our driest ciders.
The driest cider in our portfolio that you can find us enjoying all month long is also our newest cider, Bubbly Brut. This cider has been fermented to the point of absolute drieness, meaning it has no residual sugar left in it. Other dry ciders we offer include Kinda Dry and our Ciderade, which is returning in a big way later this month.
Much like the mainstream Dry January, our version of #DryJanuary has its own benefits:
Expand your cider palate. Most ciders on the market lean toward sweet or semi-sweet, so trying something on the other end of the spectrum may help you find a new unexpected favorite.
Dry ciders are a naturally lower calorie option. Our ciders are crafted without additives, added colors, or added sugar, to deliver a cleaner cider experience that all starts with our 100 percent fresh-pressed Northwest apple juice. Combine this fresh approach with the fact that dry ciders are naturally lower in calories and carbs, and you’re looking at an excellent happy hour choice that’s happy for your health and your taste buds.
Support local vendors. The Pacific Northwest is the leader in apple production, and on average 50 apples are used to make every gallon of cider. These apples are then sold off to cideries for pressing and fermentation. There are over 90 registered local cideries in the PNW where your favorite ciders are made and sold. From apple to can, you’re supporting the local economy in this unusual time where your support is more important than ever.
So, kick that champagne cork, wine glass, and cocktail shaker to the curb and pop the top on your favorite dry cider this #DryJanuary.
Portland Cider Company is committed to making the best cider in the Pacific Northwest - it’s in our roots! Portland Cider Co. was started in 2013 with the mission of bringing together cider rooted in the English tradition with a little Portland personality and culture. Combine those things, and you’ve got the Portland Cider Company.
